About Calla Lily plant care guide

Calla lilies, also known as Zantedeschia, are elegant and graceful plants that produce beautiful flowers. They are native to southern Africa and are commonly grown as both indoor and outdoor plants. Here's a plant care guide for Calla lilies:

Care guide

LIGHT REQUIREMENTS

Calla lilies prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but excessive exposure to the sun can scorch their leaves. Place them in a location that receives morning sunlight or partial shade during the day.

TEMPERATURE

Calla lilies prefer moderate temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C and 24°C). They can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but are sensitive to frost. Protect them from freezing temperatures and keep them away from drafts or cold air.

WATERING

Calla lilies require regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water them when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels dry. Ensure that the pot or container has good drainage to prevent standing water, which can lead to root rot.

HUMIDITY

Calla lilies appreciate moderate to high humidity levels. If the air in your home is dry, increase humidity by placing a tray filled with water and pebbles near the plant. Ensure that the bottom of the pot is above the water level to prevent waterlogging. You can also mist the leaves occasionally.

SOIL

Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and garden soil or a commercial potting mix for flowering plants is suitable. Good drainage is important to prevent waterlogged roots.

FERTILIZATION

Feed your Calla lilies with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the package instructions for the appropriate dilution ratio and frequency. Reduce or stop fertilization during the dormant period in winter.

POTTING

Plant Calla lilies in pots or containers that have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Choose a pot that allows enough room for the plant to grow. When repotting, handle the rhizomes (bulb-like structures) carefully, as they are delicate.

PRUNING

Remove any spent flowers or yellowing leaves by cutting them off at the base. This promotes the growth of new flowers and maintains the plant's appearance. After the blooming period, you can trim back the entire plant to encourage new growth.

Dormancy

Calla lilies go through a period of dormancy during the winter months. During this time, the plant will naturally die back, and the foliage will turn yellow and wither. Reduce watering and allow the plant to rest. You can remove the dead foliage or leave it until new growth emerges in the spring.

Outdoor planting

If planting Calla lilies outdoors, choose a location with well-draining soil and partial shade. Plant the rhizomes in the ground at a depth of 3-4 inches (8-10 cm) and space them around 12 inches (30 cm) apart. Water them regularly and protect them from frost.

By following these care guidelines, you can enjoy the stunning blooms of Calla lilies and keep them healthy and thriving. With their elegant appearance, they make excellent additions to gardens or as potted plants indoors.
